The State of Marriage and Family in the United States

A startling report issued just prior to the Pope Leo's meeting commemorating the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia.

A briefing on the five themes for “Ten Years after Amoris Laetitia”

Pope Leo XIV is commemorating the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) by convening a global meeting at the Vatican from October 7 to 14, 2026. In anticipation of that meeting, Communio, a Christian nonprofit ministry dedicated to strengthening marriages and families based in Alexandria, Virginia, has just released its briefing entitled “The State of Marriage and Family in the United States: A briefing on the five themes for Ten Years after Amoris Laetitia” (or here).

Says Communio:

“Pope Leo is now convening the heads of the Eastern Catholic Churches and the presidents of the world’s episcopal conferences to mark the 10-year anniversary of Amoris Laetitia and to consider how the Church proclaims the Gospel to families today…This briefing was written to provide the American data for that conversation.”

Here are some key statistics from the report:

“Despite the manifest importance of the Church in fostering marriage, the researchers note that 85% of churches spend nothing on marriage or relationship ministry and only 23% of Catholic pastors offer any ministry to newlyweds.”

Let’s hope the American cardinals and bishops attending the Amoris Laetitia meeting in Rome read this report!
